How to appear in ChatGPT search results

ChatGPT search cites pages it can fetch, read and trust as a good answer to the question. There is no submission form and no guaranteed method, but the technical part is clear: if OpenAI's search crawler cannot reach your pages, or your content only appears after JavaScript runs, you are unlikely to be cited. The rest is the same work that makes pages good search results.

1. Let the search crawler in

OpenAI's documentation says that sites that want to appear in ChatGPT search should allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. It is separate from GPTBot, which collects training data; you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot. Check your robots.txt with the AI crawler checker.

Also check your firewall or CDN: bot protection that blocks unknown crawlers can block OAI-SearchBot even when robots.txt allows it.

OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers as well as its own crawler. Pages that are indexed and rank in traditional search engines, Bing in particular, have a better chance of being found. Make sure your site is verified in Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google Search Console, and that the pages you want cited are indexed.

3. Make the content readable without JavaScript

AI crawlers often do not run JavaScript the way Google does. Open your page source (not the rendered page): the main text, headings and prices should be in the HTML. If the source is an empty shell, use server-side rendering or prerendering for content pages.

4. Answer questions plainly

Pages that are cited usually answer a specific question near the top, in a sentence or two, then add the detail. Use descriptive headings that match how people ask, tables for comparisons, and specific facts: numbers, dates, names, conditions. Vague marketing copy gives a model nothing to quote.

5. Show who you are

Clear signals of who is behind the site: an About page, contact details, authors on articles, an Organization structured data block with your official profiles, consistent business details across the web. Of the 24 sites SignalCrawler audited in September and October 2026, 20 had missing or incomplete Organization data.

6. Keep it fresh and consistent

Update key pages when facts change, keep one URL per topic, and avoid near-duplicate pages that split the answer.

How to tell if it works

Ask ChatGPT, with search on, the questions your pages answer and see which sources it cites. In your analytics, ChatGPT referrals usually arrive with utm_source=chatgpt.com in the link; track them as a channel.

What SignalCrawler checks here

The audit's AI search readiness checks cover the technical side: which AI search and training crawlers robots.txt allows, content that appears only after JavaScript runs, structured data for the organization, and the basics of indexability. Fixes are listed in the plan with the pages they affect.
