llms.txt checker and validator

llms.txt is a Markdown file at the root of a site that gives AI tools a short map of its most useful pages. The format was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024. It is a community proposal, not a standard that search engines have committed to, so think of it as a low-cost extra rather than a ranking factor.

This checker fetches /llms.txt from your site, checks its structure and tests whether the first links in it answer.

What it checks

  • The file exists at /llms.txt and answers 200 with text, not with an HTML page. Many sites answer every address with their normal page or a “not found” page and status 200; that is not an llms.txt.
  • An H1 title on the first line: # Your site or product name. It is the one required part of the format.
  • A summary in a blockquote under the title: > One or two sentences about what this site is.
  • Sections with ## headings that group the links.
  • Links as Markdown list items: - [Page title](https://example.com/page): what it covers.
  • The links work: the first 15 are requested, and any that do not answer with a page are listed.
  • An optional /llms-full.txt with the full text of the key pages.

A minimal valid example

# Example Store

> Example Store sells refurbished laptops with a two-year warranty and ships across the EU.

## Products

- [Laptops](https://example.com/laptops): all models with prices and specifications
- [Warranty](https://example.com/warranty): what the two-year warranty covers

## Help

- [Shipping and returns](https://example.com/shipping): delivery times and costs by country

## Optional

- [Blog](https://example.com/blog): buying guides and reviews

The ## Optional section marks links a tool can skip when it needs a short context.

What to put in it

List the pages that answer the questions people ask about you: what you offer, prices, documentation, policies and contact. Keep it short; it is a map, not a copy of the site. For the full guide, see what llms.txt is and how to write one.

llms.txt does not control access

llms.txt suggests what to read. Whether AI crawlers may fetch your pages is decided by robots.txt. Check that with the AI crawler checker.
